Birmingham and the wider West Midlands area is primed for growth
The cost-of-living crisis has hit hard across the UK, but Birmingham and the Greater West Midlands region is hoping to come out the other side unscathed. Law firm Irwin Mitchell recently teamed up with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) to anticipate future growth prospects in 50 UK locations.
In Q4 2023, the study shows Birmingham’s economy will experience a 1.1% year-on-year growth in its GVA, reaching £29.6 billion. That’s strong numbers when you consider Coventry and Wolverhampton are forecasted to yield 0.5% and 0.1% GVA growth respectively.
The wider West Midlands area is also set to benefit from being named as one of eight new ‘investment zones’ across the UK. The scheme, which is underpinned by £80 million of fresh investment across five years, is aimed at turbocharging research and development in the UK’s industries with the highest growth potential.
It’s also worth noting that the West Midlands as a whole is one of five areas set to meet or surpass the UK average annual GVA growth of 2.1% between 2024 and 2026.
