The Most Entrepreneurial UK Cities
PallMallIn the UK, we are lucky to have a wealth of opportunities available to new business owners. Cities across the country are benefiting from an increased range of services, with faster Wi-Fi, flexible lease offices, and even mentoring programs for start-up companies to access.
However, if you are looking for the ideal base to launch a business, there are three cities you cannot afford to ignore. All consistently appear in the 'most entrepreneurial' ranking lists.
Here are the main reasons why London, Birmingham, and Manchester stand out as fantastic places to operate a company.
London
Voted No 1 in the European Digital City Index, London is a world-class start-up city with superb facilities for new businesses to enjoy. Shoreditch, and more recently the South Bank, have become hubs for entrepreneurs to launch their ideas.
Inspired by the success of Google Campus, which has co-working spaces alongside a start-up school and successful business mentoring, other companies have poured investment into developing their own flexible workspace offerings.
This has resulted in dream conditions for new businesses to grow - ample co-working and office rentals, with plenty of seed funding from established companies looking to nurture and reap the rewards of new business collaboration.
If you are a female entrepreneur, London has everything you need to succeed. It has recently been voted the 3 rd best city in the world for female business owners!
Birmingham
Outside of the capital, Birmingham is the most entrepreneurial UK city, with a record number of start-up loans taken out in the past year. Birmingham City Council are also actively targeting and encouraging new business development - they were the winners of the Best Business Support Package in the Enterprising Britain Awards.
In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the famed manufacturing industries of the Midlands. Jaguar Land Rover is just one company pledging major investment into developing their production capabilities. The Midlands Engine Project has also earmarked 392 million pounds for the region's growth plan.
Part of the secret behind Birmingham's success is down to their high-quality educational facilities. The University of Birmingham is often ranked alongside the UK's elite educational establishments like Cambridge and Oxford, with a similar distinguished history of producing CEO's and directors.
A forward thinking council, increasing investment, and a pool of talented students, mean it is nosurprise that Birmingham is always included in the best UK cities for start-ups.
Manchester
The 'capital of the north' is not only an excellent place for creative types (its music and fashion scenes are legendary), but it is also a fantastic place to base a fledgling business. The city's retail, communication, and IT sectors have flourished, largely driven by an influx of professionals since the BBC's move to Salford Quays.
An analysis of start-up companies saw Manchester ranked the 2nd most entrepreneurial city within the UK, and there are a host of big name businesses based in the city itself - Laterooms.com, the Cooperative Group, and Boohoo are all major employers.
If you want a location for your start-up that has great facilities but lower living costs than London, then Manchester might be just the place. It is the only city outside of London in which the coworking giant We Work has opened an office - a sign that other large commercial property companies may soon follow suit.
