For a growing business it is inevitable that at some stage larger premises will be needed. Staying for too long in a cramped environment not only harms productivity, it also encourages arguments and lowers staff morale - exactly what a business does not want to happen.

However, it is also possible that you may 'jump the gun' and sign off on a larger facility without using your existing premises to their full capability. This is especially true of warehouse properties; space is often underutilised, with outdated stacking-structures and picking processes in place.

Here are 4 ideas that will show you how to make the most of your warehouse space, and some products that can be used to achieve it.

Go Vertical

While it's pretty obvious that vertical stacking structures are needed, how high do yours actually go? Is there a lot of 'fresh air' between the roof and the top of the racking? If so, then space is being underused. Modern shelving reaches new heights. Of course, you may need to invest in new picking machinery and equipment to reach the higher shelving, but the storage gains made willmore than make this worthwhile.

Can It Be Automated?

In days gone by, massive amounts of time were wasted as employees navigated stairways and illthought-out racking systems to try and locate a product. This obviously led to low productivity levels among employees, while also causing much frustration.

Automated shelving removes all this inconvenience and brings the product to you. Again, it may involve a larger initial expense, yet the transition to a leaner warehouse system will provide multiple benefits over the longer term, such as quicker picking and improved staff morale.

Install A Mezzanine

Is your current office taking up space on the warehouse floor? Why not construct a mezzanine office instead, and use up free space nearer the roof? The floor area can then be converted to something that is going to add more value for your company, such as additional product storage.

While a small office may not appear to take up much room, imagine if it was replaced by tall racking - significant storage capacity could probably be freed up and utilised.

Outdoor Possibilities

One common storage area that is often ignored is outdoor space. If you have a secure site with a 24 hour workforce then you could be using your outside yard more efficiently.

Robust cages are now available to keep products secure and protected in all weathers. The costs involved in the installation of cages and CCTV are minimal when compared to the higher rents of larger premises. Even if you operate in a high-value industry, it is always possible to store maintenance kit and equipment in the outdoor area.
