4% growth in the Advanced Manufacturing Sector in Birmingham
PallMallThe Advanced Manufacturing
Sector is one of Birmingham's fastest growing
sectors.
One of the most successful sectors
in Birmingham is Advanced Manufacturing. This sector accounts for
around 24 of these advanced manufacturing companies have their
headquarters in Birmingham, contributing over £600million to the
economy of the city and surrounding region every year.
Birmingham City Council's recent end
of the year report showing the region's performance in 2015/16
showed that the advanced manufacturing sector experienced a 4%
growth in the city, compared to previous years.
In terms of potential, the advanced
manufacturing sector is predicted to boom in coming years, thanks
in part to the development of new technology and
automation.
The move towards renewable
technology and a low carbon society is already creating
opportunities for innovation across the country. Birmingham is at
the forefront of this growth. The city is currently taking part in
a number of low carbon initiatives and research into new areas,
like hydrogen fuel cell technology, is currently being carried out
at Birmingham University.
In terms of traditional industries,
Birmingham still has a strong showing of large scale vehicle
manufacturers such as Jaguar and Land Rover. These industries have
the potential to benefit massively from advanced manufacturing
methods in the future, particularly when it comes to the
manufacture of niche products for aerospace and
motorsports.
Advanced manufacturing could also
see big areas for growth in healthcare, thanks to the increasingly
complex specialisation of medical technology. Birmingham already
has a strong variety of advanced medical industries with the
Birmingham Science Park and these look set to grow further in the
future as advanced manufacturing grows in the region.
