Why let office space in the Birmingham area?

Previously known as the “Workshop of the World”, Birmingham has a long and proud heritage as the heart of Britain’s Industrial Revolution. While it retains strong links in manufacturing and engineering today, the city is increasingly evolving into one of the UK’s most influential hubs for the service sector too. As an influential financial and commercial centre, Birmingham has undergone serious regeneration as part of the City Council’s Big City Plan (BCP).

The 20-year BCP launched in 2010, with the aim of enhancing the connectivity of the city centre by creating a more “efficient and walkable” city centre, ideal for commuters and residents alike. In addition, the BCP will provide 65,000 square metres of new, futureproof public spaces, creating appealing areas for colleagues to socialise and network.

The BCP is also expanding Birmingham’s so-called ‘City Core’. It is growing out into the Jewellery Quarter, which has also experienced significant regeneration of late, as well as Westside and Ladywood, Southside and Highgate, Digbeth and Eastside.

From a connectivity perspective, the City Council’s £600m rejuvenation of its New Street train station has been the jewel in the crown thus far. It has been the catalyst for Birmingham’s resurgence, while plans for a new High Speed Rail line into Eastside could transform the city’s links nationwide further still. The extension of the Midland Metro Line to improve links between Snow Hill and New Street stations has also overhauled the city’s internal connectivity too.

As of August 2020, Birmingham was considered the UK’s leading regional city for start-up growth for a sixth consecutive year. In 2018, the Financial Times also reported that more people had migrated from London to Birmingham than the other way for the first time in decades.

Birmingham city centre is also undergoing a green revolution too, as part of its Clean Air Zone (CAZ) project. Businesses within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road will be required to abide by the new CAZ from June 1 2021. It’s the first phase of a long-term goal to prohibit all private vehicles from driving through the heart of Birmingham city centre by 2030. The City Council hopes the CAZ will encourage healthier, sustainable public transport, whilst limiting nitrous oxide (NO2) levels in the city to 40μg/m3.
